A Simulator for Replicating Equine Breathing

Master of Science in Engineering (30 ECTS) – can be adapted for a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (15 ECTS).

About Precision Pulmo

Precision Pulmo is a Swedish deep-tech company based in Linköping, developing a new platform for the objective measurement of respiratory function. Our technology derives airflow characteristics from the sound generated by the air itself, using advanced signal processing without any moving mechanical flow sensors. This enables measurements during natural breathing, even in patients who cannot follow breathing instructions.

Our first product, Equinspire, targets equine veterinary medicine. It is a portable, non-invasive solution designed for use in clinics and stable environments, enabling objective respiratory monitoring over time.

Background

Developing and validating our measurement methods requires reproducible reference signals. Breathing patterns in live horses vary from breath to breath, making it difficult to isolate the effects of hardware and algorithms. A physical breathing simulator would provide a controlled reference for further testing, development and analysis.

The project includes

  • Review equine respiratory physiology, including respiratory rate, tidal volume, airflow profiles, differences between rest and exercise, and typical respiratory abnormalities.
  • Develop a requirements specification and design and build a programmable breathing simulator, for example using a piston- or bellows-based mechanism with servo control.
  • Validate the simulator's airflow against reference instruments and document its accuracy and repeatability.

We are looking for students in

Mechanical engineering, mechatronics, engineering physics, biomedical engineering or electrical engineering.
